-open 24/7 now (was not when I was in college)
-the dumbbells and fixed-weight barbells are FALLING APART. They are extremely loose and wobbly. Feels like they might fall off the end right onto your face. I am convinced that it is only a matter of time until they have a lawsuit on their hands. This may be because you have a ton of muscle guys in this gym who think it's cool to drop the weights after a set so they make sure everyone knows just how difficult what that set was and how heavy those weights were...the louder the boom the better.
-lots of free weights
-It just looks worn out and run down currently.
-It's gross almost everywhere. Everyone sweats I get it, but there have been more times than I can count when there are no disinfectant bottles anywhere. Or there might be one but when you try to use it you find out the sprayer doesn't work. I have passive-agressively brought the broken or empty ones up to the counter and left them there hoping they get the hint.
Cons:
Their promotions and advertisements can be a little misleading. They'll tell you there is a 49 dollar sighn up fee with a monthly rate of 35 dollars. But its alot more expensive than that. they have a 49 dollar "activation fee" and expect you to pay 2 months in advance; so thats nearly 160 dollars to sighnup. Every November they also have a 40 dollar annual fee which they don't tell you at all about. I'm guessing this is so that they can get extra cash from new students going to MSU. Their facilities are Ok; they have a little bit more equipment than IM WEST but their locker rooms are awfuly disgusting. I'm going to be canceling my membership soon, I paid almost 250 dollars this semester and I rather just give IM west my 85 dollars and not deal with all this shenanigans
-will be expanding their space
Locker room is gross. It's dirty and small and has like 1 shower. Equipment is in good shape but is packed no matter what time you go in. Also seems like everyone is taking steroids that go there-that could also be because everyone is like 19-21 years old
Just okay. I will say it is your best option if you want free weights in East Lansing but that doesn't mean it is the best gym I've been to...not by a long shot.
I'm hoping the renovations they have planned motivate better care for their facilities otherwise I may just end up saving the money I spend each month and buy my own set of weights for the basement.
-speaking only for the mens' side: the locker rooms are also gross and falling apart. The single toilet wobbles more than the weights do. There is also only a single shower. There is a bench missing with holes in the ground where it should be instead for you to trip over. There is almost never paper towel in stock. There have been multiple occasions where there is no soap in any of the dispensers. The list goes on. I don't know if this is because the employees are lazy, the management is lazy, or if there is just complete disregard for hygeine here (I lean toward the latter). I expect any gym to make sure the facilities are stocked on a daily basis but this is most assuredly not the case here.
I have been a member for over a year now and while I appreciate the 24 hour access, parking, etc., I have become extremely disappointed. While at a workout class today, a member who claimed to be an employee actually swore and yelled at the fitness instructor which was extremely unprofessional and made me contemplate cancelling my membership. When I ask the employees at the front desk to refill soap in the bathroom, fix bottles of disinfectant, etc. they never do. What am I paying for? Now the gym is so busy you cannot even find space to work out, and no gym etiquette is enforced (put back weights, clean benches, etc.). Just saying that the gym will be remodeled with more space is unacceptable. The space you have needs to accommodate your members now or we will go somewhere else. Please address some of these issues internally or I will continue to discourage membership when asked about my experience with powerhouse.
I'd give it two stars if EL had a better option but it doesn't.
Good gym. A little pricey. Can also be busy with students during the school year.
-lots of parking
-i have not once seen the fans on. Maybe this has to do with the time of day I work out (6 am), but I have been there a few times after work too and never seen them running. If this is because the management thinks people want it to be hot so they sweat more, just stop. I can only take off so much clothing. If people want to sweat they can wear extra clothing... in fact they make clothing for that: it begins with the word sweat. But again, maybe this is because there are a ton of muscle guys who want to be able to wear string tanks and still sweat their asses off all over the equipment I want to use but can't sanitize after they leave their sweatprints on it.
