As to other services like basic physicals or minor illness issues I wasn't impressed much at all...but the phlebotomists downstairs who i think are mostly nursing students are cool...they never missed my veins and I have small veins so kudos to them. Go elsewhere if you can but if you're an msu undergrad or grad student with no other insurance you don't have much choice...I heard the moniker "olin death center" once and I'm sad to say I dont think it's much changed...not the worst but not the best either...not really saying much is it?
Okay for simple stuff or for a referral. Would not recommend going if you have a serious illness or issue. Nurses definitely could be trained better. Often I've had nurses be rude and unprofessional, especially when calling to ask questions about prescriptions on file. It's like they would rather not be bothered by you and it's a huge inconvenience in their day to speak with you.
Ridiculous. Wouldn't give me copies of my own medical files even though I've been given them before, they have a medical records section and it's my medical history???? I was also given a serious mental illness diagnosis in one visit and put on a bunch of horrible medication to treat this misdiagnosis. A lot of the workers are mean. A joke.
Solid and fast service most of the time. They answer calls within a reasonable amount of time in my experience, don't let other reviews fool you. However, some of the nurses there can be unprofessional at times, and one I had even seemed to not know how to conduct medical examinations properly.
Mixed on olin...I've had decent experience with the psychiatry department but as someone else here said you may have a very long wait to see them...which is not good at all if you're having psychiatric issues...I hadn't seen them in a year since i had been doing well...but was having issues again and it was a month before i could get in again after begging to be seen by anyone asap...they could only offer me a social worker visit in the interim...I had a non olin therapist that i was seeing at the time and told them i needed help with MEDS! Not talk therapy which I was already doing!..to their credit though the nurse was able to get me a refill of a med that i had taken before as a stop gap measure...their best psychiatrist Dr. Randy Hillard left a few years ago to be the medical students pysch...so for me that was a huge loss as he was hands down one of the best psychiatrists I've ever seen.
If you need to get blood drawn, the people downstairs know what they're doing and do a great job talking to you to try and keep your mind off of getting blood drawn. The gynecologists are nice and helpful. I can't really review the general health doctors because I haven't seen them for anything besides a cold.
Olin is overall good, but if you are experiencing severe physical pain, like with broken bones, I recommend going to Sparrow instead.
The only downside is that it becomes difficult to see someone because they get booked up quickly during the fall and spring semesters, but they can't help that. If you feel like you are struggling, I recommend calling them right away and follow their instructions to set up an appointment with a psychiatrist. It can take up to 2-3 weeks before you will be able to see someone. (Do not wait until your mental health problems become severe.)
I have been to Olin to see a psychiatrist for more than three years now. Their psychiatry ward is solid and all of the social workers, psychiatrists, and receptionists care about clients. They always do their best to accommodate me if I need to see someone sooner than my scheduled appointments.
